Using nose drops effectively

A recent study by Dr Jonathan Overdevest and colleagues from Columbia University in New York has demonstrated that the Kaiteki position is the best way to deliver nose drops to the olfactory cleft.

Delivery of drops remains problematic for many patients who need treatment for olfactory disorders. Traditionally, patients were recommended to kneel down and put the top of their head on the floor, or hang their head off the foot of the bed. Neither of these techniques is as effective as the Kaiteki position. This simple technique, in which the drops are put into the nose while lying partially on your side, allows you to get the drops where they need to be, rather than having them go down your throat.

Kaiteki means “comfortable” in Japanese, and it is indeed a much easier position to get in and out of.
